Summer in Review

As we enter the first weeks of September, we are staring down the end of our very first growing season!

To say this year was full of ups and downs would be an understatement. We struggled, we persevered, we laughed, we cried, and everything in between. Farming, for us, has quickly become something that is synonymous with reverent devotion to faith in the land and faith in ourselves. Making mistakes can be discouraging, but the sooner you accept them and learn from them, the easier the entire experience becomes. We were able to grow hundreds of pounds of food this year including garlic, tomatoes, greens, squash, onions, broccoli, and the list goes on. But already, with this first year of experience under our belts, we have plans on how to improve for next year and to grow even more.

We’ve truly learned a lot in this first year, I can’t wait to keep improving every year from here on out. Here are a few photos that sum up the highlights of this summer!

Scape harvest! If you ever want a good way to absolutely kill your back, harvest some scapes.

Next came the fresh garlic harvest!

And now we have what we affectionately like to call the garlic forest, where all the garlic we didn’t sell fresh is being cured and dried.

And this is from our very first famers market! I remember being so nervous that day, but now we love going and seeing all the friends we’ve made there.

After an uncharacteristically cold and wet few months, our tomatoes finally started turning red and we were so excited.

My favorite part of summer is when the sunflowers start to bloom, and this variety in particular is my favorite! It’s called the Teddy Bear.

Our first few squash harvested!

We’d like to thank everyone who’s supported us through this entire process. Whether you helped line the field, pulled some garlic, planted squash, or sent encouraging messages our way, ALL of it is very much appreciated. If there is one thing a farmer needs more than she needs water, the sun, and some good soil, it’s love and support from friends and family.

Thank you!

PS Be sure to watch out for more blog posts in the future! We’ll be updating everyone on different crafts and projects we’re working on in the off season, as well as plans for next season!
